![]() “Within our reach,” Falkenhayn’s memo read, “behind the French sector of the Western Front there are objectives for the retention of which the French General staff would be compelled to throw in every man they have. France was the crux, and knocking France out of the war would bring the British to the peace table. The key to winning the war, argued the chief of staff, lay in the West Russia, disorganized and unstable, could be dealt with later. Both sides had dug in, and the war of movement-and German dreams of a lightning victory-vanished into the sullen horror of trench warfare.įaced with this stalemate, Falkenhayn sat down in December 1915 to write a long memorandum to the Kaiser. But the Belgians had fought valiantly, France’s Russian ally had invaded the eastern German Empire, and the French had smashed into the exposed flank of the German army on the River Marne, halting its drive. Originally, according to the intricately developed Schlieffen Plan, the German armies were to have sliced through Belgium and into northern France, sweeping the French army and its British allies before it in an irresistible strike at Paris. A personal favorite of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Falkenhayn was faced with a problem: The war against France, Belgium, and Britain was not going as planned by Prussian strategists. Descended from a long line of Prussian military men, he was a cold, rational, distant man. The operation was the brainchild of Erich von Falkenhayn, chief of the German general staff as the year 1915 was coming to a close. Recreated from trench maps this map combines open field warfare with dense, close-combat forest engagements and trench warfare.Operation Gericht-which means “judgment” or “tribunal”-was the German offensive of the Battle of Verdun. As described in game: "Wooded terrain south of Verdun with intense fighting in 19."īased on the first day of the battle of Verdun. Later maps will include iconic locations such as fort Douaumont and Vaux (canceled), where fighting indoors will be part of the gameplay. This is the most recent map to be added to the game. This is a very large map with long trenches and large wide open fields. If the Germans lose their furthest back trench, they have to fight uphill in a forest to try to take it back. On the German side there are significant trenches. On the French side there is a ditch that is hard to attack because it is at the bottom of a hill. There is a large wide open area in the middle. There are six trenches that can be captured. This is a very large map, with lots of hills. Set in the rocky and wooded Vosges mountains where heavy fighting occurred this map features challenging heights and natural obstacles. It has two trenches that the French and Germans are trying to capture. This map features a French and German trench system with a no-mans land in between resembling a classic WWI trench warfare scenario. The map is loosely based on the four-de-paris area in the Argonne forest north-west of Verdun. There is a large no-mans land in the middle.Īn environment created from actual trench maps. ![]() This medium-sized map has four trenches that can be captured. This map is inspired by the les esparges, vauquois hill and haute chevauchee mine craters we visited around the verdun area. Over the years multiple attacks and counter attacks left their marks creating an elaborate maze of trenches, craters and machine gun nests. This map is currently only available in the free for all "Rifle Deathmatch" and attrition mode.Ī dense trench network set around a huge mine crater. ![]() First, everywhere you see the annotation FK (tech lingo: foreign key) is another point of added complexity. In the diagram above, we’ve had to add a lot of complexity into the system to make it fit the relational model. Several JOIN tables have been added just so different tables can communicate with one another. The relational database version of our initial “whiteboard” data model. In this data center management domain (pictured below), several data centers support a few applications using infrastructure like virtual machines and load balancers. Creating a graph database from there is just a matter of running a few lines of code. Here’s the kicker: That model you drew is already a graph. Probably a collection of circles and boxes connected by arrows and lines, right? Imagine what your whiteboard structure looks like. On the other hand, modeling your data for graph technology couldn’t be simpler. By the time you have a working database, it looks nothing like your original whiteboard sketch (making it difficult to tell whether it’s meeting user needs). With traditional database management systems, modeling is far from simple.Īfter whiteboarding your initial ideas, a relational database requires you to create a logical model and then force that structure into a tabular, physical model. Then, in the modeling process you map those needs into a structure for storing and organizing your data. You start with your business and user needs (i.e., what you want your application to do). So if you don’t know a single line of code, you’re in luck.Īnyone can do basic data modeling, and with the advent of graph database technology, matching your data to a coherent model is easier than ever.Ī Brief Overview of the Data Modeling Processĭata modeling is an abstraction process. In fact, data modeling is as much a business concern as a technological one. While some data modeling scenarios really are best left up to the experts, it doesn’t have to be difficult by default. You may worship the expert data modeler from afar. Often reserved solely for senior database administrators (DBAs) or principal developers, data modeling is sometimes presented as an esoteric art unknownable to mere mortals. That structuring process is known as data modeling. ![]() When it comes to creating a new application or data solution, you need to provide a structure for that data. The shape, size and functionality of that container depends on your intended use, but in general, a container is necessary. It’s probably useless if you don’t put it in a helpful container. (Psst! If you’re already a data modeling vet, check out this article on how to deploy your seasoned skills to a graph database model.)ĭata is like water. This week, we’ll discuss the basics of data modeling for graph technology. In past weeks, we’ve covered why graph technology is the future and why connected data matters. In this Graph Databases for Beginners blog series, I’ll take you through the basics of graph technology assuming you have little (or no) background in the space. Today, we’re going to take a closer look at one in particular – the graph data model – and walk you through a better first-time data modeling experience than I originally had. Other data models exist, and they are awesome. The good news: The relational model doesn’t have to be your default. But when it’s used as the one-size-fits-all data model for every project and application under the sun, well, there’s going to be a lot of mismatch. This isn’t to say that the RDBMS model is always bad (it isn’t) or that it always sucks (it doesn’t). Of course, that meant my lessons in data modeling would follow the relational data model – and not to spoil the ending – but it sucked. ![]() Like a lot of backend developers at the time, we didn’t intentionally choose to use an RDBMS, it was just the default ( that’s no longer the case). Our team was using a relational database (RDBMS), specifically MySQL (we later switched to Postgres). Starting out, the first thing I learned was data modeling. For six-ish months of my life, I was a database developer. Wherever they are, Andy and the other toys haven't let go either. That's the heart's true nature: to never ever let go. This way, when you change the pixels for the Width, the Height will also change. In the drop-down menu next to Width, change Pixels to Inches.Īlso, make sure that the Chain Link icon is enabled. Keeping your resolution at 72 will produce a pixelated image after resizing it.ĭoing this now ensures you won’t forget later and lets you see the exact pixels you will be working with. To ensure you print out a high-quality photo, set your resolution to 300. Selecting this option will maintain the detail in your pixels without over-sharpening. In the drop-down menu, choose Bicubic Sharpener (Reduction). If you’re resizing a larger picture to a 4×6, you will want to choose a resample that works well when reducing the size of the image. You must be careful when resampling because choosing the wrong option can degrade the image quality. Resampling is changing the pixel dimension of an image. Step 2: Change The Resample To Bicubic Sharpener You will need to change most of the settings in the window that pops up. With your image already open in Photoshop, go to Image > Image Size you can also press Alt + Control + I (Win) or Option + Command + I (Mac). Step 1: Open The Image Size Properties Panel Follow this guide closely to ensure your picture looks as crisp as possible. ![]() Resizing an image in Photoshop is not complicated, but you will have a stretched-out ugly picture if you don’t know what settings to change. The two best tools for the job are Photoshop and Photoshop Express. Resizing a larger photo to a 4×6 is relatively easy. This also means that aspect ratios can be linked to multiple image sizes. The aspect ratio tells you the width of an image relative to its height. This is the standard size for modern images. So, if your image is 800px wide, the new width would be: 800px x 9 / 16 = 450px. This will give you the new width of the photo. Knowing the aspect ratio of a photo can be helpful when trying to determine how it will look on different screens.įor example, if you have a photo that is 4:3 and want to know how it will look on a 16:9 screen, you can multiply the width by 9 and divide it by 16. If you want to print your photos in a more traditional 4:3 size, you may have to crop them slightly. This is the size of an HDTV screen, and many digital cameras now take photos in this size by default. A 4:3 aspect ratio is the standard size for a photo, as it was created to fit traditional television screens.Īs technology has changed and screens have widened, the 16:9 aspect ratio has become more popular. The aspect ratio is the size of the photo in comparison to the size of the screen it will be displayed on. Understanding The Aspect Ratio Of A 4×6 Photo That is unless you want to create a mini gallery of moments from recent trips and adventures. However, they are not typically meant to be hung on the wall. ![]() The 4×6 picture can still produce excellent results, mainly if printed on high-quality paper. The 4×6 photo is smaller in size but not necessarily in quality. If you are looking for a large, high-quality print to put as a small decorative piece on your wall, an 8×10 is the way to go. An 8×10 image is close to the size of a piece of paper.Īn 8×10 photo will have much more detail and a higher resolution than a 4×6 photo. 4×6 Images Compared To An iPhone 13 ProĪ 4×6 photo is much smaller than an 8×10 photo. This image size is the common printed size of most images for scrapbooks and small frames. Physically, a 4×6 photo is about the size of a large cellphone. So a 4×6 photo converts to 101.6 x 152.4 mm. – 4×6 Photo Dimensions In Millimetersġ inch = 25.4 millimeters. So a 4×6 image converts to 10.16 x 15.24 cm. – 4×6 Photo Dimensions In Centimetersġ inch = 2.54 centimeters. – 4×6 Photo Dimensions In PixelsĬonverted to pixels, a 4×6 photo ends up being 1200 by 1800 pixels. How Big Is A 4X6 Photo?Ĥ×6 stands for “ four inches by six inches.” That’s four inches wide and six inches tall. ![]() Then with the proper dimensions and an idea of how big the photo is, I’ll share an easy way to resize your images to fit a 4×6 print without worrying about cropping or quality loss! Since it’s hard to imagine exactly how a 4×6 photo looks when viewing a photo on your computer, let’s take a look at how big this print size is and how it looks in real life. 4×6 is one of the most common print sizes for photo albums and keepsake images to look back on. It was a bit of a tumultuous tour, but getting to play this show felt like a cathartic release for the band during this difficult time. It was the final show for the leg that occurred following the Roskilde tragedy. We’re excited to be joined by Amy in this episode so she can share her amazing story with you all! Ed noticed a woman with a white umbrella who had been following them from night to night, so he called her down to the stage to play her request for Wash that was written on the umbrella. One of the earliest occasions of this happening was back in Pittsburgh in 2000. Breakerfall, Whipping, Spin The Black Circle, Hail, Hail, Corduroy and In My Tree are the first six songs of the night, and they absolutely do not disappoint. This show getting off to a hot start was a sign that the band was starting to loosen up and learn how to have a little fun on stage again. The legendary Daughter performance with the It’s OK tag, forever enshrined on the Touring Band 2000 DVD, marked as a healing moment for the band during the toughest period in their history. This show comes right off the heels of a major turning point from the Binaural tour – The Jones Beach shows.
